Personal Life
Sheriff Greg Champagne was born and raised in St. Charles Parish. Sheriff Greg Champagne and his wife Alice Landry Champagne have been married for 28 years. They have two children: Rochelle C. Fahrig, an attorney, and Greg Champagne Jr., a commercial pilot.
EducationChampagne attended Hahnville High School and graduated from Nicholls State University in 1979 with a Bachelor's Degree in Government. Upon graduation, Greg was named to the Nicholls State University Hall of Fame and subsequently as one its Outstanding Alumni.
He went on to receive his law degree from the Louisiana State University Law Center in 1982. He served as an assistant district attorney in St. Charles Parish for nearly 14 years and earned a reputation as being a tough but fair prosecutor with a 94% conviction rate.
Training
In addition to his formal education, Sheriff Champagne has graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia twice; first from the FBI’s Law Institute for Prosecutors and more recently from the FBI's Law Enforcement Executive Development Program.
He has attended numerous training programs during his 27-year law enforcement career. These include, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Northwestern University of Chicago's Graduate School for Prosecutors. He has also represented the National Sheriff's Association at two international counter-terrorism training programs that focused on the detection and prevention of terrorism in both Israel and England.
Official Public Service
Greg Champagne was first elected Sheriff of St. Charles Parish in 1995. He was re-elected in 1999 without opposition, in 2003 with 81% of the vote, and again in 2007 with 83% of the vote. He was honored by the Louisiana Crime Victim's Coalition in 2003 by being named Louisiana Sheriff of the Year.
Sheriff Champagne was the first Sheriff of St. Charles Parish to serve as President of the Louisiana Sheriff's Association in 2007 - 2008. He also serves on the National Sheriff's Association's Board of Directors and is presently Chairman of the NSA Legal Affairs Committee.
The Sheriff also serves as a member of the Louisiana State Law Institute's Committee on Criminal Justice, which recommends changes in criminal law to the Louisiana Legislature. He is a certified POST instructor at the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office Training Academy. Recently he was elected as Sergeant at Arms for National Sheriffs' Association for the term of 2010-2011
Community ServiceThe sheriff is very active in our community. He has been a long time member and past-president of the Rotary Club of St. Charles Parish, a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2409. He also has been a Mentor with the St. Charles Parish Public School System for over 10 years.
